The Plan

This is a story about physics, a slightly hostile alien race, and a really big black hole. But really its not a story at all but a bunch of questions. Questions I'm hoping someone cleverer and more learned than I can answer. If you think you have the answers please post them below. The story starts with an alien race, a type 3 on the Kardashev scale. This particular alien race happens to have a presence in our galaxy and the story starts as they become aware of our existence. Their astronomers detect our planet and our existence on it, probably by the effect we have had on our atmosphere, but maybe also by our radio emissions. Once detected they go into full scale investigation and determine we will eventually become a threat to them if left unchecked. Reports are written by their scientists and handed up to their governing structure. Estimates of how long before we start to expand outward into other star systems and how long before we, or our AI, start to turn the entire gal...

My reply to the ASA about Toyota and Self-Charging

From:  Samuel Price To:  Ben Redknap <benr@ASA.Org.UK> Sent:  Sunday, 3 March 2019, 00:16:56 GMT Subject:  Re: Your ASA reference A19-561662 Toyota Please could you reconsider the case, I believe you are missing the point I address some of you comments in-line below but also consider this: It is scientifically possible to produce petrol from the products contained in the exhaust of a vehicle. To do so would require specialised equipment and energy, but theoretically I could build a car that took energy, say from a generator attached to the wheels that was powered by the act of braking, and use that to create a small amount of petrol from exhaust gases that I had stored from previously driving. You are saying that it would be fine for me to market this vehicle as "self fuelling" because my contraption puts fuel back in the tank when I brake? I think this would be very misleading to the general public because in reality all I've done is u...

ASA reply to complaint about Toyotas Self Charging Hybrids

Ben Redknap  <benr@ASA.Org.UK> To: 27 Feb at 09:21 Dear Mr Price Thank you for contacting us about the   Toyota ad and for your patience whilst we have been considering your complaint. We asked the  ASA Council  to make a decision on a similar issue to the one you have raised, however after careful consideration, they decided that no further action should be taken. The Issue(s) Seven members of the public objected to five online ads: Three complainants believed the claims, “self charging” in ads A, C, D and E were misleading, because they implied the car was electric and, therefore, environmentally friendly. One complainant believed the claim, “self charging” in ad B was misleading, as it implied that the car could take itself to a charging station. Three complainants believed the claims “self charging” in ads B and E were misleading, because the “charge” came from petrol. One complainant believed th...
